Martin Mooney
(B. 1960, Belfast). Studied at the University of Uslter Faculty and Design from 1979 - 1980, obtaiined an honours degree in Fine Art at Brighton Polytechnic in 1983 and then undertook postgraduate study at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1983 and 1985. He has been the recipient of many awards including the 'Richard Ford Award' from the Royal Academy in 1985. Martin has had many solo shows and his work has been exhibited in Dublin, Belfast, Toronto, Barcelona, London and Cyprus. His latest show in the Portland Gallery in London in May 2004 was a complete success.
Wherever he travels, Mooney takes with him a supply of small panels; these give him the freedom to stop at anytime and capture the very essence of the landscape around him, enabling him to produce beautiful plein-air paintings. Whether he be in Ireland, India or Russia the essence of the place is captured with immediacy and fluidity.
This hugely talented artist also produces more deliberate studio paintings, with extraordinary attention to detail reminiscent of the craft of the 17th and 18th century Dutch painters.
Martin now lives in Donegal with his wife Trudi and their two children.
