" My subject matter generally comes from everyday life, representing experiences that I hope most people could recognise: rituals of everyday existence, especially those that connect us with our inner selves. There is often for me a strong undercurrent of reference - 'homage' of a sort - to the family of image-makers to which, as an artist, I feel I belong.
The 'monumental' aspect to some of my work is in part because I see people's lives as often quite heroic, but more importantly, I am drawn to the monumental for stylistic reasons. So my figures and their settings are not realistic but stylised to fit my pictorial world.
I studied French at University. My degree studies included a course in Art History, which stimulated an interest in the visual arts. I started painting in my late twenties and have supported myself since then from painting and music teaching. In 2000, I took a six-month sabbatical in Paris, and in 2001-2002 I studied sculpture at the Frink School of Sculpture. "
