History
Castle Upton sits in its own beautiful 4 acre gardens, next to a stunning late eighteenth century Robert Adam designed stable block, with a herd of Chital deer grazing the surrounding fields. The Hilton Championship Golf Course and four star Hotel lie immediately next door on the estate land.
The Castle has developed from a medieval fort and chapel, to a tower house and fort, and eventually into a grand Scottish Baronial Castle in the mid-nineteenth century. Its top floor and most of its battlements were removed in the early twentieth century.
Castle Upton takes its name from the Upton family who originally came to the site in the early seventeenth century and lived there for nearly 300 years.
The present gardens and house were restored by Sir Robin and Lady Kinahan who bought the castle and its land in 1963. It is now the family home of their son, Danny, his wife, Anna, and their four children.
